The most imposing structure that overlooks the city is Jaisalmer Fort. So we can start the day with a visit to Jaisalmer fort. It is believed to be one of the very few "living forts" in the world, as nearly one-fourth of the old city's population still resides within the fort. For the better part of its 800-year history, the fort was the city of Jaisalmer. The first settlements outside the fort walls, to accommodate the growing population of Jaisalmer, are said to have come up in the 17th century. So needless to say the Jaisalmer fort is bustling with life and activities with the people living within it and with the visitors to the fort. The fort's massive yellow sandstone walls are a tawny lion color during the day, fading to honey-gold as the sun sets, thereby camouflaging the fort in the yellow desert. For this reason, it is also known as the Sonar Quila or Golden Fort. The fort stands amidst the sandy expanse of the great Thar Desert on Trikuta Hill. It is today located along the southern edge of the city that bears its name; its dominant hilltop location making the sprawling towers of its fortifications visible for many miles around. After visiting the Jaisalmer fort we can visit the Moti Mahal also known as the Salaam Singh Ki Haweli. The Palace was built in 1815 by Salam Singh, the prime minister of the kingdom when Jaisalmer was the capital. This mansion is famous for its distinctive architecture as it constitutes 38 gracefully carved balconies. The architecture of this mansion is inspired by dancing peacocks. Another notable Haveli or Palace to visit while in Jaisalmer is the Patwon Ki Haveli. Patwon Ki Haveli is a cluster of five large Havelis in Jaisalmer. Built-in 1805 by Guman Chand Patwa, it took the workers almost 55 years to complete the first haveli. With an interesting history, Patwon Ki Haveli is actually the first and the largest haveli to be constructed in Jaisalmer. History says that Patwa was an extremely wealthy man and a well-known trader of his time. Due to his riches, he could afford to build a luxurious palace and thus ordered the construction of separate stories – one for each of his five sons. The interiors of the palace are exquisitely adorned with a mix of Mughal and Rajput-styled decor. There is a museum operating in the Haveli which is well worth a visit to get an insight into the life of the rich during the era. The late afternoon can be spent in the deserts of Jaisalmer in the San region. The desert safari on a camel is a unique experience where you can head to view the glorious views of the sun setting behind the golden dunes of the Thar Desert. The San region is full of activities at the time of sunset with camping out there in the Thar desert with traditional Rajasthani folk dance and music.

Day : 6 - A long drive to Jalore

On day 6 we set out on a long drive to Jalore. It is about 320 kms and should take about 6 hours to reach Jalore. Jalore is called the granite city of India. The only place for us to visit here would be the Jalore fort, which is perched atop a steep and perpendicular hill. It commands the town from a rocky outcrop 1200 ft high fortified with a wall and bastions with cannon mounted upon them. The fort has four gigantic gates however it is approachable only from one side, after a two-mile-long serpentine ascent. The approach to the fort is from the north, up a steep, slippery road through three rows of fortification to a single rampart wall 20ft high. It takes an hour to climb up. The fort is built on the lines of traditional Hindu architecture. The mahal or "the residential palace" inside the fort is now desolated, and what is left of it are the ruined symmetrical walls with huge rock formations around it. The cut-stone walls of the fort are still intact at many places. There are some drinking water tanks in the fort. Interestingly there are Hindu temples, Islamic Mosques as well as a couple of Jain temples within the fort complex.
