On Day 1 from Bangalore we shall take the road towards Mangalore and on the way stop at Sravanabelagola, which is just about 2.5 hours drive from Bangalore. The Gommateshwara Bahubali statue at Shravanabelagola is one of the most important tirthas (pilgrimage destinations) in Jainism, one that reached a peak in architectural and sculptural activity under the patronage of Western Ganga dynasty of Talakad. Chandragupta Maurya is said to have died here in 298 BCE after he became a Jain monk and assumed an ascetic life style. Shravanabelagola has two hills, Chandragiri and Vindhyagiri. Acharya Bhadrabahu and his pupil Chandragupta Maurya are believed to have meditated there. Chandragupta Basadi, which was dedicated to Chandragupta Maurya, was originally built there by Ashoka in the third century BC. The 58-feet tall monolithic statue of Gommateshwara is located on Vindyagiri Hill.[10][11] It is considered to be the world's largest monolithic statue. The base of the statue has an inscriptions in Prakrit, dating from 981 AD. From Sravanabelagola we shall continue towards two of the most important monuments in South India, Halebid and Belur temples. Hoysaleswara temple, which is referred as the Halebidu temple, is a 12th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. It was the former capital of the Hoysala Empire. The temple was built on the banks of a large man-made lake, and sponsored by King Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala Empire. Its construction started around 1121 CE and was complete in 1160 CE. During the early 14th century, Halebidu was twice sacked and plundered by the Muslim armies of the Delhi Sultanate from northern India, and the temple and the capital fell into a state of ruin and neglect. The Hoysaleswara Temple premises include a museum managed by the Archaeological Survey of India. It contains numerous pieces of ruins and temple artwork recovered from the site for closer three dimensional examination. Next in line the Chennakeshava Temple, is a 12th-century Hindu temple and it is located just 17 kilometers and half an hours drive from Halebid. It was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE, on the banks of the Yagachi River in Belur. The temple was built over three generations and took 103 years to finish. It was repeatedly damaged and plundered during wars, repeatedly rebuilt and repaired over its history. Historians have found 118 inscriptions in the temple complex, dated between 1117 CE to the 18th century, which provide a history of the temple. From Belur we shall proceed to Chikmagalur city, just half an hours drive away. Chikmagalur is a hill station city set at an altitude of 1100 meters above sealevel and it is bordered by tall hills of the Western Ghats and it enjoys a pleasant climate through out the year. We shall stay back for the night at this lovely hill station city.
